Power Disturbances are expensive for your business. You pay the price in lost material, lost productivity, lost data and lost profits.

Cat Uninterruptible Power Systems
Now you can protect your critical processes better than ever before. Caterpillar brings you the Uninterruptible Power System (UPS), providing reliable protection against the full range of power events likely to affect your facility.

Conventional uninterruptible power systems rely on lead-acid batteries - unreliable, short-lived and maintenance intensive. The Cat UPS replaces batteries with the predictable and reliable power of a flywheel. Consider these advantages.
Lead-Acid Battery-Based Systems Cat UPS Flywheel Advantage
Size Large, bulky, space intensive. Requires one-forth the floor space of a battery system- 300kVa unit fits in 10 square feet.
Maintenance Needs inspection, terminal cleaning, tightening of connections, voltage measurement, testing and more. Requires only periodic air-filter service.
Reliability Batteries cause 70% of failures in conventional interruptible power systems. Mechanical energy storage proven reliable.
Longevity Deteriorate with age and usage; need periodic replacement. Nearly unlimited life with no fall-off in performance; flywheel never needs replacement.
Life-cycle cost High cost due to battery maintenance and replacement and low efficiency. Flywheel offers less than half the life cycle cost of any battery-based system.
Energy Efficiency 90-93% efficient. 96-97% efficient.
Safety & Environment Presents risk of explosions and acid spills; requires special handling and disposal. Safe for personnel and environmentally clean.
Temperature Requires special heating or cooling to maintain specified temperature. Rated for full performance at -20 degrees to 40 degrees Celsius.

The Cat Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) instantly and precisely corrects for power events as brief as a few milliseconds. For prolonged events, a gen set start option supplies starting voltage to an on-site backup generator – a system 10 times more reliable than battery-powered start-up. Here is how the Cat UPS works:

Normal Operation: The Cat UPS continuously monitors utility power quality while using a small amount of power to keep the flywheel fully charged.

Brief Event: When Cat Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) senses an abnormal voltage or interruption, the flywheel supplies power to the critical load. After the event, operation returns to normal.

Continuous Power: The CAT UPS is designed to be generator set friendly and only requires "1 to 1" sizing unlike battery systems. Once the generator set is started and up to speed, the CAT UPS walks in the load. A 24 VDC option even allows the generator to start with the flywheel energy without the use of the generator starting batteries (which is typically the #1 reason generator sets won't start.)
